FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. NAVY AWARDS CONTRACT TO STOTTLER HENKE TO PROTOTYPE AN INTELLIGENT
TUTORING SYSTEM FOR STRIKE FIGHTER PILOTS

Intelligent tutoring software will complement next generation portable mission rehearsal systems, so pilots can practice missions and receive automated instruction while at sea.

SAN MATEO, CA, July 1, 2000 — Stottler Henke Associates, Inc. today announced the award of a six month $70,000 contract with the U.S. Navy to prototype an intelligent tutoring system that automatically evaluates pilot performance and provides instructional feedback after simulated missions. This prototype will help the Navy assess the feasibility of implementing an air tactical ITS (ITS-AIR) that complements next generation portable mission rehearsal systems deployed at sea.

“Next generation portable mission rehearsal training systems will be aboard aircraft carriers and used by pilots while at sea,” says Dr. Daniel Fu, the project’s manager. However, if scarce and costly human instructors are required to operate these new systems and provide instructional feedback to pilots, the potential ‘any-time, any-place’ benefits offered by these systems will be significantly reduced,” continues Dr. Fu.
