a new software product that enables rapid visual analysis of
complex, time-oriented data. DataMontage is a Java class library that offers unparalleled
flexibility to display information-dense collections of timelines, time-series graphs and time-
stamped notes. DataMontage enhances reporting and decision support systems for medical
data review, manufacturing data analysis, market research, and planning and scheduling –
environments in which professionals are often called upon to quickly glean meaning by
detecting patterns spanning many variables.
“DataMontage helps decision-makers connect many dots to form a discernable picture,” said
Jim Ong, Group Manager at Stottler Henke. “By presenting coordinated collections of graphs
and timelines, DataMontage makes it possible to find important relationships in complex data
much more easily and rapidly than can be seen using traditional graphs.”
DataMontage is the latest addition to a family of commercially available intelligent software tools
and applications offered by Stottler Henke, a software development and consulting company
with deep expertise in artificial intelligence and other advanced software technologies. Stottler
Henke created DataMontage as part of the
Intelligent Patient Data Review Assistant (IPDRA),
currently under development in collaboration with physicians and medical informatics
researchers at the U.S. Department of Defense and at leading medical schools. IPDRA is a
Web-based clinical information system designed to help clinicians review patient data more
effectively by presenting “views” that show clinically meaningful subsets of each patient’s
medical history. For example, a view could present the clinical events, findings, diagnoses, and
treatments that comprise the patient’s cardiac history. Another view might show patient data
relevant to a specific medical problem such as diabetes. IPDRA uses DataMontage to present
timelines and time-series graphs that show many clinical variables at once to help clinicians see
significant patterns and trends.
Lincoln Technologies, Inc. (www.lincolntechnologies.com), a software company focused on
pharmaceutical development, selected DataMontage for integration into its software for drug
safety surveillance and data mining. Lincoln's software uses statistical data mining techniques
to generate drug safety signals from databases of clinical trials and post-marketing adverse
event reports.
"DataMontage is a wonderful tool for helping drug safety physicians evaluate signals, by drilling
down and making sense of complex patient histories which caused the signals to be generated,"
said David Fram, vice president of safety software R&D at Lincoln. "DataMontage's time-aligned
displays of adverse reaction onsets and durations, dosing start and stop times of
suspect and concomitant medications, and diagnostic test results will help our pharmaceutical
users assess the nature and meaning of each patient's detailed sequence of clinical events
more quickly and intuitively."
DataMontage allows users to view
graphs and timelines
stacked vertically or arranged in rows
and columns to see patterns spanning multiple variables. Flexible control over the color, shape,
and size of graph and timeline symbols lets users encode multiple attributes and highlight
significant data points. Colored lines and regions in XY graphs help users compare data points
to reference values and ranges. DataMontage lets users see additional information associated
with each graphical data element using mouse rollovers, popup HTML windows, and navigation
to another web page. Any Java applet, application, or Web server application can configure the
content and format of DataMontage displays via Java application programming interface (API).
Programs written in Java or in other languages can also configure DataMontage displays by
creating Extensible Markup Language (XML) files.
DataMontage is available immediately. Stottler Henke is marketing DataMontage to
independent software vendors, systems integrators, and end user organizations. Pricing starts
at $695 for a minimum configuration of developer and end user licenses. Development of
DataMontage was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.
